Norway Fjord Photography Expedition

Join me for 4 days of immersive landscape photography and Puffin watching. From the gateway of Gothenburg to the dramatic cliffs of Runde Island, here is our path.Content Goes Here

Day 1: The Modern Gateway (Gothenburg  -> Lillehammer)
  • Driving Time: ~5 hours (450 km)
  • Strategy: Drive past Oslo early to position yourself for a sunrise start in the mountains tomorrow.
  • Stop 1: Oslo Bjørvika (2-hour stop). Focus on the Oslo Opera House and the Munch Museum. The white marble and “Barcode” district offer world-class geometric and architectural photography.
  • Stop 2: Lake Mjøsa. Catch the sunset reflections on Norway’s largest lake as you approach Lillehammer.
  • Stay: Lillehammer (e.g., Clarion Hotel Hammer or Scandic Lillehammer).
Day 2: The High Mountain Pass (Lillehammer  -> Runde)
  • Driving Time: ~6.5 hours (380 km)
  • Strategy: This is your “Landscape Day.” The transition from valley to high alpine peaks is dramatic.
  • Stop 1: Lom Stave Church. A 12th-century masterpiece. In mid-April, the dark, weathered wood provides a moody contrast against lingering snow.
  • Stop 2: Strynefjellet (Rv15). This high mountain pass is kept open year-round. Expect “snow walls” and frozen turquoise lakes like Oppstrynsvatnet.
  • Stop 3: Remøy Bridge. The final approach to Runde involves crossing several scenic bridges over the Atlantic—perfect for drone or wide-angle coastal shots.
  • Stay: Runde Miljøsenter or Goksøyr Camping (located at the foot of the bird trails).
Day 3: The Puffin & Eagle Mission (Runde Island)
  • Driving Time: 0 hours (Explore by foot/boat)
  • Morning (Wildlife Safari): Take a boat trip from Runde harbor to see White-tailed Sea Eagles and Northern Gannets hunting. Mid-April is a peak activity time for eagles.
  • Mid-Day (The Lighthouse): Hike the 3-hour loop to Runde Lighthouse. Capture the rugged cliffs and the “end of the world” feeling of the Atlantic coast.
  • Evening (Puffin Arrival): Hike up to Lundeura at 17:00. The puffins typically land on the grassy slopes between 18:00 and 21:00. The low “Golden Hour” sun hits the cliffs directly, providing perfect light for flight photography.
  • Stay: Runde (Stay a second night to maximize photo opportunities if weather shifts).
Day 4: The Scenic Return (Runde -> Gothenburg)
  • Driving Time: ~9.5 hours (780 km)
  • Strategy: Start early (05:00) to allow for a long mid-day break.
  • Stop 1: Heidal Valley (Lunch Stop). Bypass Lillehammer and head into the Heidal Valley. It features the highest density of traditional timber farms in Norway.
  • Photography: Capture the turquoise Sjoa River rapids. Have lunch at Heidal Ysteri (famous for local waffles and brown cheese).
  • Final Stretch: Use the high-speed E6 expressway from Otta all the way back to Gothenburg to ensure an evening arrival.
